The Telephone and Network Marketing

Talking on the telephone in network marketing is something we must do, yet it is many peoples greatest fear.  For some even picking up the phone to call friends is really scary…
So, you may be thinking, why the heck would someone scared to death of the phone become involved in network marketing!  The reason is simple.  These people have the entrepreneurial spirit, and burning desire to create a long-term residual income, MLM and network marketing opportunities just kept popping up.  They see the money people could make in this business, and they want a piece.  They then soon realize it’s a little difficult to get people interested when you’re scared to talk to them on the phone, and not really that comfortable talking to people face to face either!  So there comes a point in time when they realize they must absolutely overcome their fear.

The Phone is Your Friend

This post is for anyone who’s feeling this pain.  If you have this fear, it is debilitating. It is paralyzing, but once you face it, you open up an entire world of possibilities.

Let me add my two cents, and I encourage anyone else who’s got some pointers about phone phobia to add them here also.

If you’re in this business, or want to get started, you are going to need to become friends with your phone.  There are many ways to go about it, but pretty much the easiest way is to just do it.

1) Practice.  Find friends or family members who you’re really comfortable with, and try your presentation on them.  This can be done in person, or via the telephone.  Allow them to give you feedback, and practice until you’re feeling more confident.

2) Know what you’re talking about understand your product, or service that you are marketing.  Whether you’re presenting your business opportunity, or responding to someone who has shown interest, you’ll feel much more comfortable if you’ve studied your business and can be ready for any questions that might come up.

3) Psyche yourself up.  You know why you got into this business.  You know your own goals.  Hopefully you are genuinely interested in helping others to succeed, and you know your opportunity can be a vehicle to help them do that.  Get excited before you make your calls.  Think about where you intend to be in 6 or 12 months and see yourself as already being there.  Your passion, and excitement will be felt by the person on the other end of the line.  If you don’t seem excited about what you’ve got to offer, no one else will be either.  Try some affirmations or positive self-talk before you dial.

4) Make a list of some questions you might like to ask your prospect. You don’t want to go right into your presentation, so ask about family, or employment, or reasons why they might be interested in creating a long-term residual income.

5) Ultimately, you’re going to have to just do it.  Otherwise, you’ll avoid making the calls until the cows come home.  You’ll find excuses, other things to do, and ways to get yourself out of picking up that phone.  Put the phone in your hand, have all the information that you might need available, psyche yourself up and just dial.

Remember…the anticipation of an event in most cases is generally much worse than the event itself.  Don’t spend a bunch of time sitting around worrying about making that phone call.  When you need to make those phone calls, follow the above steps and then just do it.  The sooner you get used to making calls, the sooner you’ll be on your way to an awesome career, working for yourself, building your network marketing empire!

Hi Herb – perfect! Simple and true. It’s crazy that we get so nervous and will avoid – at all costs – picking up the phone.

Gary DeRitter was funny last week here at the FST when he said, when it comes to picking up the phone or anything else, we pick ANYTHING ELSE!! Thanks for all you do!
